Stealing The Network

The Bottom Line

This is an excellent book. Where the Hacker's Challenge books from Osborne set up scenarios for you to solve, this book sets up fictitious scenarios and provides the solutions in a fictional short-story sort of format. The story form draws you in and keeps your attention while the details of the story provide you with tremendous insight into how blackhat hackers think and how they go about bypassing your security to get into your network. You should read this book.
Pros
  • Stories keep your attention and draw you in
  • Fictional stories provide tons of info about real-life security issues
  • You may not sleep well after learning how blackhats can bypass your security
Cons
  • None

Guide Review - Book Review: Stealing The Network

There are plenty of books out there that will teach you how to identify a target, find its weaknesses and exploit them to gain entry. They are primarily designed to teach admins how to find these vulnerabilities and get them patches- not to teach the next generation of blackhats how to hack your network. But, sometimes the lessons get lost in the details. With 1000 plus pages of information on various tools and how to use them its sometimes difficult to remember when and why you would use the tool.

A book like Stealing The Network: How To Own The Box gives some perspective to the tools. By taking real-life stories and fictionalizing them, the authors provide examples of how blackhats think and the tools they use, as well as what the whitehats can do to detect or prevent intrusions in a format that is engaging and entertaining while also being educational.

I recommend using a book such as Hacking Exposed or Counter Hack as well, but this book can help to bring life to the lessons from those books and show you how the knowledge from those books can be applied in real life.

Even if you don't use this in conjunction with a more detailed book of hacker techniques, this is an excellent book. The short-story format draws you in and makes it exceptionally easy to breeze through the book quickly. You may find yourself wondering when you're done just how secure your network is and what else you should be doing to prevent yourself from becoming a story in Stealing The Network 2.
