Top 6 Security Certification Prep Books

By Tony Bradley, CISSP-ISSAP, About.com

One of the main ways of validating your skills as an information security professional is through certification. Nothing can replace hands-on experience for getting the knowledge you need, but when you're preparing for the actual exam books like these are invaluable to test you and help you cram and prepare to pass.

1. TICSA Training Guide

The TICSA Training Guide is invaluable for anyone trying to prepare for the TruSecure ICSA Certified Security Associate certification exam (exam TU0-001). If you are studying for this exam, this book is a must-buy. If you are studying for a different security certification such as Security+ or CISSP, this book can still help you to reinforce the concepts you need to pass.

2. Security+ Prep Guide

Security+ is a great first certification for someone looking to enter the field of Information Security. This book covers the 5 subject areas well and includes review questions at the end of each section. Nothing beats hands-on experience for real learning, but for those ready to take the exam this book is a great tool.

3. Security+ Certfication for Dummies

Security+ Certification for Dummies is another great addition to the classic Dummies series of books. The CDROM includes practice tests, study notes and flashcards that can be used for last-minute cramming to refresh your memory before taking the exam. Readers should understand this book is intended as a study guide and not to provide you all of the information you need to learn to take the exam.

4. Mike Meyers' Certification Passport- Security+

Mike Meyers' Certification Passport- Security+ is a great tool for someone to use as a last minute refresher before taking the exam. This book will not *teach* you the subject matter, but Trevor Kay does an excellent job of providing the information you need and highlighting areas of particular interest that you should focus on in order to pass the Security+ exam.

5. SSCP Prep Guide

The SSCP (System Security Certified Practitioner) exam is more of an entry-level certification than the CISSP. The SSCP exam covers only 7 CBK's: Access Controls; Administration; Audit and Monitoring; Risk, Response and Recovery; Cryptography; Data Communications; and Malicious Code / Malware. If you are preparing to take the SSCP certification exam I think you will find this book valuable. The information and practice questions in the book will have you well on your way to passing.

6. CCIE Security Practice Labs

A book review of CCIE Security Practice Labs (CCIE Self-Study) by Fahim Hussain and Yusuf Bhaiji. The book contains seven comprehensive CCIE security labs to fine-tune your configuration and troubleshooting skills. This book will help you prepare for the CCIE Security lab exam and hone your security configuration and troubleshooting skills.
