PrepLogic LearnSmart Video Training for CISSP

Preparing For The CISSP Exam

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Tony Bradley, CISSP-ISSAP, About.com

The CISSP exam is a 6-hour test covering a wide range of security topics. Widely regarded as a must-have certification for security professionals, the CISSP exam requires that you have knowledge in many areas. Boot camps and instructor-led training courses can cost $2000 or more. A series like this can save money and allow you to stop, start, rewind or fast forward at will to make sure you don't miss anything.

About The Product

The PrepLogic LearnSmart Video Training series for the CISSP exam comes on 11 CD's (not DVD's), with over 33 hours of video instruction.

In this comprehensive training, leading expert instructor Michael Solomon covers the full CISSP Common Body of Knowledge, explains how the various domains relate in an overall security policy and delivers solid preparation for the certification exam. Using his skilled background and a variety of visual resources, such as diagrams and animations, Michael is able to clearly communicate information to you in a way that’s easy to understand.

System Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Me, 2000, XP Home Edition or Professional

  • 64-MB RAM (128 MB if running Windows XP)
  • 130 MB available hard disk space
  • Super VGA (800x600) or higher resolution
  • CD or DVD drive
  • 16-bit sound card
  • Speakers or headphones
  • Windows Media Player 9 Series or newer

My Review

The lectures on the discs are informative and relatively engaging. It is similar to sitting in an instructor-led classroom lecture, except that you can pause and rewind.

Michael Solomon does a good job of covering the scope and depth required to pass the CISSP exam, and explains the topics clearly so that even beginners should be able to follow the information.

At $1,495 for the base LearnSmart Video Training package, the program is significantly more expensive than just picking up a certification study guide or exam cram book. But, most people will learn and retain more by attending a class or watching a series like this.

Compared with most CISSP classes, the LearnSmart series is a bargain. Not only do you get 33 hours of "classroom" lecture, but you can watch it over again, go back or jump ahead as you need. You can watch the lectures on your schedule, unlike a classroom. Also, companies may benefit by buying a program like this and leveraging it across multiple employees rather than spending $2,000 plus per person to attend a class.

Overall, I think that the PrepLogic LearnSmart Video Training series is a quality product and that using it should help just about anyone learn what they need to pass the CISSP exam.
