About.com Rating four out of Five

By Tony Bradley, CISSP-ISSAP, About.com

The Bottom Line

Between spyware, keystroke loggers, viruses and other types of malware, it can take a lot of time to ensure your system remains clean and functional. With DriveShield Plus installed, your system will be restored to its original state, removing any and all changes made by malware, with each and every reboot.
Pros
  • Protect against all forms of malware
  • Maintain stability and integrity of system with each reboot
Cons
  • Must disable the software to make changes you WANT to make
  • No icon or program group to click on to enable or disable product

Description

  • Very effective protection, albeit a tad draconian.
  • Takes some time to remember that changes you make will be lost unless you disable the software
  • Must move files like email data to persistent storage or lose all your email each time you reboot
  • Should have an icon visible to click on for enabling and disabling the software as needed
  • Enabling or disabling the software requires a system reboot each time to take effect

Guide Review - DriveShield Plus

The product is aptly named. DriveShield Plus does, in fact, shield your drive from everything. Whether it is spyware that installed when you visited a suspicious web site, a virus that infected your system when you opened an email attachment, or the game of Doom III you saved after playing for 3 hours. ALL changes that are written to the hard drive will be lost when the system is rebooted.

In light of the fact that there are so many threats out there on the Internet that require such an array of different products to protect against them, none of which is 100% effective, a tool like DriveShield Plus seems to make sense. You can surf the web and read your email knowing that any malicious changes that might get made to your system can be easily undone with a simple reboot of the machine.

Of course, until you DO reboot your system, it may still be infected with various spyware and other malware. Your computer may be propagating the latest virus for days until you decide to reboot and restore your clean, functional system.

The other downside is that you need to make sure you move files such as email data to the persistent storage area, the one place where changes are retained, or you will lose all new email with each reboot. It takes some time to get used to remembering to disable the software when you are trying to install software or make changes on purpose.

It is an extreme solution. But, it is an effective one and you always know you can get your clean computer back.
